Can I see the dentist if I'm pregnant?

Whether you are currently pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should definitely see your dentist before, during, and after your pregnancy. Because of the hormone changes that take place during pregnancy, moms-to-be are at a greater risk for periodontal disease, or “pregnancy gingivitis,” which can cause gums to bleed easily. Gum disease can greatly affect the health of the developing baby.

It’s a good idea to have a professional cleaning prior to pregnancy to make sure that your teeth are in good health and to take care of any restorative procedures prior to getting pregnant. Once you are pregnant, it’s best to avoid restorative work until after you give birth unless it’s an emergency. Let Dr. Coussa know when you do become pregnant so that you can be sure to have check-ups to ensure the health of your gums.
